Electronic medical records (EMR) use is increasing at a rapid rate. Several drivers in the US and Canadian markets are leading to uptake of technology in medical practice in smaller clinics. Increasingly, physicians are realizing the importance of good implementation methodology in achieving a successful EMR implementation. An informal poll taken recently in the US by Dr. David Brailer, while speaking to a group of clinicians, indicated that as many as 20% of physicians have tried to implement EMR. Of those, 50% had experienced a failure. Over 70% of the clinicians knew of a colleague who had experienced an EMR implementation failure.
In the US, the Department of Health and Human Services, recently launched the "Decade of Health Information Technology" and a strategic framework for improving EMR diffusion in physician offices. One of the important pillars of the strategic framework includes setting a priority for decreasing EMR implementation risk.
In Canada, several organizations have realized the importance of EMR implementation support and provide a variety of tools and supports.
